Michael Neal Arnold, Certified Appraiser, MAI, MRICS

A fourth generation Californian, Michael was born and raised in a ranching family in the San Joaquin Valley. He came to Santa Barbara in the late sixties to attend UCSB. Just prior to graduating (Geography/Urban studies), he began in appraisal as an intern with Robert W. Raymond, MAI. Michael enjoys valuing unusual properties and working with clients, accountants, and attorneys in estate planning and litigation support. Michael enjoys spending time with his large and growing local family, and has been involved in leadership at Trinity Episcopal Church for years. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation.

Thomas A. B. Arnold, Certified Appraiser

Thomas was born and raised in Santa Barbara. He grew up being exposed to the practice of appraising, often helping with appraisals as a youth. While earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from UCSB, Thomas developed a knack for research paper writing and statistical analysis. Upon graduation at the age of 21, he began work for a local residential contractor, assisting with office and job site management. Thomas began his work at Hammock, Arnold, Smith & Company in June of 2006, where he has worked closely with his father, Michael Neal Arnold. Thomas enjoys estate and tax planning valuations and commercial valuations for lenders. He is the patriarch of a budding family, including his wife and three young children.

C. Matthew Neal Arnold, Appraisal Analyst

Matthew was raised in Santa Barbara. He attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. The draw of family and sun brought Matthew back to Santa Barbara. While finishing his bachelor's degree at CSU Northridge, Matthew began working with Hammock, Arnold, Smith & Company. He was active in a wide range of residential valuation. In 2005, Matthew and his brother, Nathaniel, formed Arnold Brothers Construction, Inc., which specializes in residential construction and development. Matthew has become more active with Hammock, Arnold, Smith & Company while maintaining executive involvement with Arnold Brothers. Matthew enjoys time with his wife and two children, coaching youth baseball, and active membership at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club.

Jim has retired from active participation in our appraisal practice but is still available, as needed, to consult with our staff and clients.

Laura G. Zarrinnaal, Director of Operations

Laura has been with the practice for over thirty years. She grew up in Santa Barbara and, after high school, attended business courses at Santa Barbara Business College and U.C.S.B. Laura's role is central to the functioning of the practice. She schedules appointments, monitors work flow, and manages the operations of the firm. Additionally, Laura's word processing skills are used daily in the design and production of our professional reports. Laura is the proud mother of two grown sons and she loves daily workouts at the gym.

Dylan Thompson, Appraisal Aide

Dylan is the newest member of our staff. Dylan is somewhat of a jack of all trades. He assists Laura with practice operations and assists the appraisers with market surveys, database input, and development of residential valuation reports. Dylan is a student working toward a degree in business with the ultimate goal of becoming a certified appraiser. Dylan has done volunteer work with Rotary, the YMCA, and Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation. In his free time, Dylan enjoys eating, drinking, and merriment.

Benjamin F. Smith, M.A., MAI


Ben has retired from the practice and is happily spending time with his family and pursuing other interests.
